Le 52, the place to be in the 10th arrondissement - The Socialite Family

Inspiration Charles Compagnon is one of the people who gives Paris’s 10th arrondissement its unique character. A pioneer on the Parisian restaurant scene, who’s keen to promote fresh, homemade produce, he has brilliantly transformed an old butcher’s shop into a restaurant. After Le Richer and the Office – which he has now handed over to Charles Nikitis – Paris-born Compagnon has created Le 52, located in the lively Strasbourg-Saint-Denis district. This modern-looking neo-bistro, with its meticulous but minimal interior design, gives pride of place to the menu – and to the décor. Custom-made wooden and leather benches by Gesa Hansen (Charles’s wife) and natural materials – a mixture of concrete and exposed stone – adorn the walls of this lively place. In terms of the food, this is the place to come for bold cuisine. And for those who love a café atmosphere, it’s open all day. Which is another good reason to visit 52 Faubourg Saint-Denis. Le 52, 52 rue du faubourg Saint Denis 75010 Paris, no reservation.

Le 52 — Restaurant Review | Condé Nast Traveler

Tell us about your first impressions when you arrived. It looks like a Parisian café, with its terrace seating and all-day service, but it's a modern brasserie/restaurant with a warm, roomy interior. A wood bar with a marble counter top is the focal point, bookended by long saddle leather banquettes and teak Baumann chairs, round oak tables in the middle, and additional seating at the back looking out onto a leafy courtyard. Designed by Gesa Hansen with the intimacy of one's home (or a better version of one's home as the case may be), Le 52 is the kind of place you want to make your local, suitable-for-every-moment-of-the-day—breakfast on a moment's notice, business lunch, go-to dinner—spot. What was the crowd like? Hyper-local and a slew of regulars. These are 10th arrondissement residents who have made Le 52 their hangout, and other right bankers who love the accessibility of the neo-brasserie format that Charles Compagnon helped pioneer. These are diners that are serious not only about food but also a high good-times quotient and the comfort of knowing the servers. A few out-of-towners will find their way in, hoping for a spot on the terrace to people watch. What should we be drinking? Strong in spirits, particularly Eaux de Vie, coffee (roasted by Charles Compagnon under the label Cafés Compagnon), local craft beer, and a beautiful wine list. Wines by the glass don't exceed $12. Main event: the food. Give us the lowdown—especially what not to miss. The menu changes at least once a month and it's that endless variety that keeps diners returning. In addition to more classic cuts of meat and fish, you might also find sardines, mackerel, root veggies like Jerusalem artichokes, and poultry, which can make for an affordable but no less interesting meal. Other menu items include pork cheek cannelloni, which is served with crunchy vegetables (mushrooms, parsnips, Brussels sprouts); dessert might be a twist on the classic île flottante wherein instead of meringue mounds floating alone in a sea of custard they are stuffed with diced pineapple, covered in crunchy corn tuile, and served with a scoop of lime sorbet. It's fresh, often unexpected, and somehow always satisfying. And how did the front-of-house folks treat you? Things can get a bit hectic, especially since the restaurant doesn't accept reservations, but the staff keeps their cool. You may have to work a little to get that carafe of water or see the wine list again later in the meal but it's never an intentional snub. Play nice with the servers and they'll make sure you're taken care of. What’s the real-real on why we’re coming here? Best for lunch or dinner, great with a group but also wonderful for one-on-one meals. I bring every single friend or family member that visits me in Paris and everyone leaves satisfied and impressed.
