Mensae, Paris 19
Mensae opened about ten years ago, and despite generally enthusiastic reviews upon its opening, two meals there did not thrill me. In addition, there was a wine list that had nothing of interest to me. But chef Naoya Kanatani has been in charge now for three years or so, and thus it seemed time to pay another visit. And besides, it’s in Belleville, one of the most fun and interesting areas of Paris. The restaurant is up a narrow, twisty cobblestoned street near the Pyrénées Métro. station. When we arrived at 7.30, the restaurant was already about half full, and by 8pm, it was almost completely full — yet again, evidence that Parisians are eating earlier than formerly was the case. The diners were mostly French, although there were a couple or two of Americans scattered throughout the dining areas. Everyone was dressed casually, this was not a dress-up location. Ages ranged from thirties to seventies and maybe even more. The offerings on a Saturday night: We both chose the 51€ three-course menu. The wine list certainly had improved since the last time I was at the restaurant. The selections were appropriate for a casual bistrot; markups were a bit on the high side, but still were within the reasonable range. The list of red wines by the bottle: Interestingly, this was in Eastern Paris, and Belleville to boot, and although many of the producers on the list would qualify as natural because they are organic and/or biodynamic, there were no “insider” natural wines on the main list. There was, however, a separate page with a smaller number of them available under the heading of natural wines. We took the 2022 Marsannay Clos St-Urbain from Domaine Jean Fournier, one of the best Marsannay producers, and from an outstanding Burgundy vintage: The wine was excellent — crisp, flavorful, and precise; it was better than many a wine from more famous and expensive Côte d’Or villages (with Burgundy, the quality of the producer is always the most important factor in choosing the wine). The one difficulty was, as is so common in restaurants, the wine was served at room temperature, and so we had to ask for an ice bucket to cool it. Many red wines now come with instructions on the back label to serve them at 13-15ºC (55-59ºF), but restaurants continue to ignore this advice. For her first course, L to the chopped tomatoes with lemon-ricotta, shiso, seaweed, and gray shrimp: It made a delicious change from the ubiquitous tomatoes with burrata, and moreover, the quality of the tomatoes was truly notable. I took the snails and oyster mushrooms covered by a parsley mousse: This was a very good combination, with the parsley mousse (containing no shortage of garlic) going well with the mushrooms and snails. For main course, we both took the veal onglet (hanger steak) with peppers and an eggplant purée: This was a tasty dish, but nothing out of the ordinary. Finally, for dessert, we both took the roasted figs with rosemary ice cream: As with the onglet, this was a good rendition, but not truly notable. The bottom line: Mensae has improved markedly over the experiences I had nearly a decade ago. It is a good bistrot in a part of town I enjoy going to and it has a good vibe to it.
