A Weekend Getaway to Paris: Bernard’s Guide

Of course, it was raining! It’s always raining when I’m in Paris. That’s just my luck! Perhaps that’s why I’ve never been crazy about the city. I used to joke (half-seriously) that you’d have to pay me to go to Paris. But this trip was different. Luckily, I stayed at The Hôtel Balzac, and quite frankly, I didn’t want to leave—even when the weather outside finally turned glorious. 6 Rue Balzac, 75008 Paris, France This hotel was the complete opposite of everything I expected, in the best possible way. The History The hotel is named after the writer Honoré de Balzac. It sits on a street once called Avenue Fortunée, occupying the site of his last residence. This is where he lived with Madame Hanska, the love of his life, writing until his last breath. While their original mansion no longer exists, the hotel revives the spirit of one of the most talented observers of 19th-century Parisian life. The Interiors Given the name, I expected heavy 19th-century aesthetics. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by interiors featuring neutral tones and minimalist, clean lines. The hotel has been reinvented by the designer duo Festen, who knew exactly what they were doing. Parisian hotels can often be overwhelming—too much “luxury,” crystal chandeliers, and gold ornaments left, right, and center. It can give me a headache just thinking about it. The Balzac is the antidote: a hotel in the right location where everything feels just right. The Location As much as I love shopping near the Champs-Élysées, staying in that area is usually chaotic and full of tourists. However, the Balzac is located just a few minutes away from the buzz on a quiet residential street. I was able to enjoy the world’s best shopping (nothing matches Paris) and peace and quiet after a long day out. The View Arriving at my room to see the Eiffel Tower. Having a morning croissant and cappuccino with the world’s dreamiest view is a feeling that simply cannot be matched. The Bathroom It was the size of my bedroom! It came filled with Diptyque products and a luxurious bath. The Spa It is simply perfect. I know you have a luxurious bath in your room, but do not be too lazy to head down to the spa. Make time for the sauna, pool, and Japanese bath, too. It is divine! The Service Truly unmatched. I had an assigned concierge, Jihad, who looked after me throughout my stay. From the moment we met, I felt like I’d known him for a hundred years. He immediately curated a list of recommendations to satisfy my fashion appetite. What is Relais & Châteaux? No wonder why the service was so impeccable. Hôtel Balzac is a certified Relais & Châteaux property. Think of this label as the “Haute Couture” of hospitality. To earn this badge, a hotel must pass over 300 criteria. They undergo secret inspections (over 380 a year!) to ensure that guests don’t just visit a hotel—they feel at home. Book Your Stay at Hôtel Balzac Paris! Please hear me out: Do not take a taxi or public transport! If you can’t walk, simply cycle. I guarantee that wherever you go, you will have the most scenic ride. Paris has ideal conditions for cycling, and I’ve prepared a specific route for you. The Route: Hotel Balzac to Café Charlot * Distance: Approximately 5.5 km (3.4 miles) * Time: 25–30 minutes (leisurely pace) * Highlights: Down the Champs-Élysées, along the car-free banks of the Seine, past the Louvre, and into the historic streets of Le Marais. It is almost entirely flat and uses Paris’s excellent cycling paths. Google Maps: Cycle Route Here! If you subscribe to my Substack, I’m guessing you’re a fashion person. While Avenue Montaigne near the hotel offers high-end luxury, taking my cycling route leads you to Le Marais—my ultimate favorite area. If I lived in Paris, I would only live here. You will see larger-than-life characters and the specific type of “Paris Fashion” you read about in books. My biggest tip is to simply get lost here and follow your eyes. But, if you need a starting point: People Watching: Café Charlot Before you get lost, start here. It is a traditional Parisian corner restaurant and, without a doubt, the world’s best spot for people-watching. If you are there during Fashion Week, grab a table outside and feed your eyes with the looks! The Best Onion Soup Regardless of whether you like onions, you must try the onion soup in Paris. I am obsessed with it—I have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I kid you not. * Where to go: Brasserie Le Tremplin Marais. * The Verdict: As a self-proclaimed expert of Onion Soup, this is the best value-for-money soup in the city. * My Order: A table for one, a glass of house red, onion soup, and bread to dip. Shopping: Springsioux Concept Store 19 Rue Charlot, 75003 Paris, France Whilst you’re in Le Marais—even though I try my hardest not to give specific recommendations—there is one shop that I must mention here: Springsioux. This store carries independent, never-heard-of-before designers. I swear, when you’re there, you will want to buy the entire store. Each piece is unique, with a unique story. You will be greeted by Lawrence & Savir, who are passionate about all things fashion. They thrive in a creative environment and always love to meet new people. Send my best regards when you’re there! While we are on the subject of food, it would be a huge miss not to try the ultimate comfort food. This is exactly what French cuisine is about. There is nothing “chic” about traditional French cuisine—it is the cuisine to indulge yourself in on your cheat day. Expect lots of butter and cream. On that note, let me send you to Aux Crus de Bourgogne. I guarantee—you have never, ever had a Beef Bourguignon of this kind. It is truly on another level. I honestly want to go back to Paris just for a quick lunch there! People talk a lot about shopping in Paris, and I don’t need to tell you the usual spots: Champs-Élysées, Avenue Montaigne, Galeries Lafayette, and all of that. Every tourist guide mentions them. BUT! What people don’t talk about enough are the ultimate vintage clothing shops. Don’t forget—there is a lot of wealth in Paris. When people do a clearance of their Haute Couture wardrobes, most of that couture ends up in Parisian vintage shops. I asked a local friend to make a list of the best vintage spots. She is a proper “fashion girly,” so don’t take her advice for granted. You’re very welcome for the list below: * Demain Rétro * Snow Bunny: Only womenswear, but they have an amazing selection. * Nuovo: Also womenswear, incredible finds. * Fascinato: Go here if you’re a big jewellery fan. * Era Era: Great for jackets! * Vintage System * Selection: They have crazy pieces, you will love it. If you follow this guide, you will be doing a lot of walking (or cycling). My savior for this trip was my pair of HOFF sneakers. I got a pair just before my trip, and I was running and cycling around like there was no tomorrow. They are officially the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned, walking felt like my feet were getting a massage. Find your local store and try them on—you’ll understand what I mean.
