Restaurants of Note: Paris: Le Pot o’Lait

Crêpes are everywhere now, but, like the Belgian waffle, sadly bastardized and misunderstood. Le Pot O’Lait, however, does not misunderstand crêpes. It understands them better than anywhere else I know, making the best crêpes and galettes I had in Paris. A galette and a bottle of wine and you’re good to go. In the 5th Arrondissement, this place is perfect for getting away from the touristy Latin Quarter for a lighter evening meal (crêpes are not just sweet! They are perfect for every occasion!). Last time the Grumpy Tourguide went we managed to get a seat at a local bar afterwards and watch France beat Switzerland in the 2014 World Cup. Walking past the Galeries d’Anatomie comparée et de Paléontologie in le Jardin des Plantes. Nearby and of note are La Mosquée de Paris, the Jardin des Plantes, and the Arènes de Lutèce. Le Mosquée, a beautiful building constructed in the 1920s in the Spanish-Arabic style, is a bastion of Moorish culture, featuring a restaurant, a hammam (aka Turkish Bath), and a souk (marketplace/bazaar). The Jardin is a lovely old park with serpentine path, a zoo, and national history museum. And the Arénes are ruins of a Roman amphitheatre that remained undiscovered until the 18th century, now a lovely place to sit with locals, maybe enjoying a picnic and a bottle of wine. Click through for an interactive map. In short, the 5th Arrondissement can be a nice antidote to the Champs-Élysées effect if you want to make an afternoon of the neighborhood. If not, a just a trip to Le Pot for a crêpe or galette is well worth it. —The Grumpy Tourguide
