Review: Chez Toinette – Montmartre, Paris
There’s a tiny treasure of a restaurant in Montmartre, on a little cobble-stoned side street just below Sacre-Coeur should you ever be in the area. James and I did a road trip through France in August of 2011 (amazing!) and I found this place through a search on Trip Advisor and was not disappointed ! It’s such a small restaurant and the owner has packed in as many tables to accomodate the masses of people wanting to dine there. Reservations are obviously a must. It’s pretty much a 3 man team in there, owner/waiter and two chefs. Don’t expect fast service here…get a bottle of wine , soak in the atmosphere and the pleasure of your company. I promise it’s well worth the wait. The menu is simple with some classic french favorites such as foie gras, escargots, duck, lamb etc. I had the escargots to start followed by the lamb shank and James had the pan-fried prawns with curry followed by the honey & rosemary duck breast. All the food was delicious but I need to talk about the duck breast! I enjoy duck as much as the next person but don’t usually go out of my way to order it on a menu, however this duck was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever eaten! The skin was perfectly crisp with the delicious glaze of a nutty honey, complimented by the earthy and peppery taste of rosemary. The medium rare meat just melted in my mouth and I honestly wanted to jump across the table and steal James’ dish! lol Luckily my lamb shank was perfectly cooked and complimented by rustic root vegetables and a delicious sweet potato mash. We finished off our perfect meal with a creme brulee and the last few sips of our bottle of red. If you only have time for one restaurant when in Paris, make this the one. Bon Apetit!
